Are Replacement Windows Really Energy Efficient?

Modern replacement windows are often touted as the “green choice”. Energy efficiency and cost savings are their two major selling points. Their installation in your home is seen as an effective way to improve your home’s energy efficiency while allowing you to save money over time. Now, here’s the question. Is there any truth to all of these or is it all just a huge hype?

You have to know the major qualities of modern replacement windows to get the answer. Replacement windows today are designed to keep all the external elements from entering the house. But, during the cold months of winter, they allow the warm air to remain inside the home making your indoors warm and comfortable. During summer, they have the ability to prevent hot air from infiltrating the home without actually compromising the amount of natural light that is allowed inside. Thus, your home remains cool and bright all throughout the summer months.

The production of replacement windows today involves several important considerations in order for them to perform to their optimum level and live up, if not exceed expectations. More focus is given to the overall design, the materials used, as well as how they are made. Needless to say, every element counts and plays a crucial role to ensure that the replacement windows provide the benefits that will allow people not only to have comfortable and convenient time at home; but to be able to help lower their energy consumption as well and save money during the entire lifespan of the product.

It is important to point out, however, that not all energy efficient replacement windows offer the same level of performance. Generally, windows that are manufactured from materials that can control the amount of heat transfer to a minimum are considered the most energy efficient. This ability makes it possible for the units to keep the heat inside during the cold months and keep it out during summer allowing people inside the home to feel comfortable the whole year round.

Among the features available today, a double glazed glass pack with a PPG Intercept spacer or a foam Super Spacer in the gap between its two layers of glass offers the highest level of energy efficiency. In addition, to further boost their overall performance, modern windows feature glasses which are treated with a low emissivity coating. This feature allows the heat to reflect back into the room in the form of infrared light while at the same time lets a significant amount of natural light to get inside the house. In terms of material, vinyl windows are considered the most energy efficient as the material enables the unit to limit the amount of heat transfer.

Aside from their ability to lower your energy consumption, replacement windows today are also designed to prevent air and water infiltration. Double hung windows, for instance, feature sashes that snugly close into the sills and pocket headers; plus, they are designed to interlock with each other at the meeting. These enable double hung windows to effectively seal out unwanted elements from outside the house. Vinyl sashes, on the other hand come with rubber seals and weather strips to further improve the windows’ sealing ability.

In the past, the frames for aluminum, vinyl, and wood windows used to be screwed or nailed to meet together. But this approach was totally changed as it was discovered that it only weakened up overtime causing gaps from which air and water come in. Nowadays, the frame structure of the windows are instead attached by welding the seams together making way for a stronger frame that can endure bend and flex movements without loosening up. This offers more effective protection against external elements.

Looking back, replacement windows today truly have come a long way. In a short period of time, they have evolved in more ways than one especially in terms of design, features and production. With all the benefits they bring to the table, they are indeed worthy investments.
